Geological heritage item in North Avalon

This recent use of bilious brown/orange sprayed concrete (‘shotcrete’) at a well-known and loved geological feature on the corner of Wanawong Road at north Avalon, to stabilise steep banks, is ugly and a blight on the landscape. This site is listed on the State heritage list and is supposed to be protected.

A similar treatment is being proposed for the wall opposite 60 Park Road. APA is currently in discussions with Council regarding that proposal. To see another example, this one from 2023, look right when travelling south from Kamikaze Corner. It has now been graffitied.

APA recently spoke to NBC re this site and were advised that the Infrastructure team recognised the heritage value of this site and had  engaged Geology faculty at Sydney University, “academics with experience in heritage aspects which recommended shotcreting as the most appropriate way to stabilise the rockface for road safety, maintain the geo heritage aspect, and balance aesthetic concerns.” APA thinks NBC may have achieved 2 of 3 aims. The team advised that it has now been funded to apply a surface treatment to ameliorate the Shotcrete.  As at 2024 his work has now been completed.
